• Derrickhand Safety-Working The Monkeyboard

So you just got reamed by the Companyman and Toolpusher for losing 3 slugs. You're now at the monkeyboard about to start out of the hole, and your still wondering where the hell those slugs went!

Now is the time to put those lost slugs out of your mind on concentrate totally on what's important now

    GETTING TIED OFF

That's right hand, when your feet hit that walk-around getting tied off needs to be the ONLY thing on your mind.

Make sure the Sala Block is waiting for you at the walk-around. If it's not then it's time to have a talk with your driller or toolpusher to insure that it is in the future. Every derrickhand needs to leave this important safety device there for his relief.

    NO EXCEPTIONS

The very first step of your routine needs to be to grab that Sala line and attach it to the proper D ring on your safety harness. This has to be done before you ever unfasten from the derrickclimber to maintain 100% tie off. With the Sala line attached you have just greatly increased your chances of going home alive no matter how you screw up the rest of the tour.

    NEXT STEP

Standing directly under the Sala Block, grab the Sala line and give it a quick jerk. If it's functioning properly it should stop within a foot or so, if it doesn't, report this to the Toolpusher immediately. Take a quick look around. Make sure everything at the board is fastened securely. Always double check that nothing can fall from the board. You are directly responsible for the men working below you. Make a hand and look out for them.

The next step is to go get that tag line, inspect it for damage, make sure its fastened securely to it's anchor point and adjusted to length properly. Before going out to the end of the Monkeyboard, always move towards the walk-around to test the tag line attached to you. When you exert your weight against it, if something were to go wrong you wouldn't want to go careening off the end of the board to dangle from that Sala Line would you?

Now it's time to walk to the end of the board and show the driller that your tied off. Turn sideways, and show the Driller the tag line is attached to your harness. This Series of Photographs demonstrates the proper way to close the board when finished working or coming down for any reason. When folding back the end of the diving board ALWAYS fasten your tag line to the end of the Board and adjust it tight enough to keep the end of the board from falling back.

ThWorking The Monkeyboardis insures that the next time the board is worked the derrickhand cannot begin work without having grab his tag line in his hand to unfasten it from the board. When you force him to put it in his hand like this hopefully it's just instinct for him to attach it to the safety harness. This way you are looking after not only your own safety but the safety of your relief.
